Kia ora tātou,
We are celebrating Matariki this week and have a great line-up of events and activities planned.
Matariki is a significant celebration in the New Zealand Curriculum, promoting understanding of Māori astronomy, cultural traditions, and values. This unit incorporates cross-curricular learning with a focus on Social Sciences, Science, and The Arts, culminating in the creation and flying of kites (manu tukutuku). Including a hakari, kī-o-rahi practice, and the game pūkana enriches the experience, fostering community and student engagement.
We will be creating star-themed artwork today, planting a tree tomorrow, making kites on Wednesday, and having a shared lunch on Thursday.
Please bring kai to share on Thursday for lunch at 12.30, which can be left in our school kitchen in the morning.
We will hold a whole-school hui after lunch on Thursday with a kapa-haka performance, story-telling, waiata, then finishing our celebration with kite flying at 2pm. Whānau are welcome to join us on Thursday for our celebrations.
